Adventurous and Fugitive

The word I chose for these two chapters is adventurous. I chose adventurous because Ponyboy and Johnny escape from the city. They moved because Johnny killed one of the Socs, Bob. They are in like in a adventure without a plan or anything. I also pick the word fugitive. I chose the word fugitive because Johnny and Ponyboy are like fugitives. They are running away from the government/police. They are doing this because they dont want to get caught by the cops.

Skype Call- Concluding the Answers

Uncategorized October 24th, 2007

We had a skype with the kids in Canada and we had to talk about the answers that our group had decided for the four questions. Everyone had different types of answers to the questions that right now its possible that I disagree in some.  The first question was define power?, the second Does power afffect personal realtionships?, the third question is What role does power play in a person’s decision making?, the fourth question is Why is having power important to a person? Well for the first question I change my answer completely from what I and my group had to say at first. A summary from what moslty everyone said was that power is electricity, love, money, president, and family. Now I think differently. Power cant be any of that. For example, money, money cant be power. Money just buys power. Meaning that its not necessarily “power” it can be a key to power. Power is something you cant touch or see. Now I define power like this type of force or knowledge. The second question is Does power affect personal realtionships? Well in this question I dont cahnge my answer. Most of the groups got pretty much what my groups and I got at the beginning. Well, my answer was basically that it can affect personal realtionships depending how you use it. For example if you power the wrong way, it will definelty harm the realtionship. You can harm the relationship because then the person with the power takes advantage over it. They get all concieted and they think that they are higher than everyone else. This can harm the person because the person with the power will no longer speak to the other. The third question is What role does power play in a person’s decision making? A summary of everyone’s answer was that the people with power can be face pressure within themselves. They dont know what to decide, even though they know whats good from bad. Thats what my answer was at the begininng and it still is. The fourth question is having power important to a person? I still keep my answer to this question. The answer was: its’ important to a person because it make them feel self-confident. It probably makes them feel better if they are dominant over others. Also whatever they do people wont critizize them because they have the most power. They feel taller than everyone. Those are my final answers.

My Thoughts- The Outsiders

Uncategorized October 18th, 2007

My thoughts of The Outsiders was that it was pretty self-explanatory and chaotic. I think that the first two chapters were pretty self explanatory because it was straight foward. You can easily understand it. The author was very realistic in the way she wrote . I think it was chaotic because of all the action, vilolence, and adventurous scenes that it had. For example when the Socs jumped Ponyboy and Johnny. The way they described Johnny after the fight was a shocking to me.

power struggles

Identify situations in personal relationships that refelct power struggles?

Well for example a marriage couple. One of them might have more power than the other one. It might bring them struggles and might get them into a lot of fights. One of them might not like the idea that the other one has the power and have the right to set the rules or something like that. It might mess up their relationship. A other example are brothers and sisters. Usually one of them has more power than the other. If one of them has more power they  might get into plenty of fights. Since on of them has more power than the other it might bring into their relationships.

Give examples of personal experiences of power struggles and what was the outcome?

One example is when my one of my sisters and I use to fight like all the time. Since she is older than me she would boss me around a lot. I would have to listen to her because then she would like beat me up. It was kind of fun cause I would also hit her back. I wish I would have had as much as power as she did when I was smaller. This sometimes made be angry at each other for a whole day. Then we grew into what we are now and we don’t fight anymore and we understand each other more a lot more.

When and how do you use power in your interactions with others?

When I usually use my power is with my little cousins. Because they are younger then me I  boss them around. I can tell that I have the most power. I don’t beat them up like my sister  use to do with me but I blackmail them. I know I use some of my power in the wrong way but I can also use it the right way. When I say nice things to my cousins it makes them feel good about themsleves. I’m making them feel feel self-confident.

Where do you see power stuggles occuring in your surroundings?

I see power struggles in my surroundings like such as my family. Like I said earlier there are power struggles with my sister and I and with my cousins. I’ve seen power struggles in my neighborhood when this person was waiting for a parking spot and the other person just acceleratated his car and got the parking. This shows power because it seemed that one who took the parking looked that he had much more power and he seemed concieted . This became an actual fight, the people started to argue. These are examples of power struggles around me.

What kind of relationships do you see in The Veldt?

I see two types of relationships in the story, The Veldt. The first relationship I see two types of relationships. The first one is between the parents and the children. The other one is between the children. Both of them I consider unhealthy. Well in my opinion.

The relationships between the parents and the children I consider it unhealthy because they never really communicate. The children mostly have the power over the parents. The kids saying things like I hate you or like I wish you were dead, seems like  a unhealthy realtionship. The parents spoil the children in everything. This is what blocks them from communicating. The machines does everything for them. Thats the other reason they don’t have the chance to interact. The other relationship is between the children. They communicate, but in the wrong way. They both make bad choices, such as killing their parents.

Power is shown in these two types of relationship  because in either one somebody has to have the the power. In the relationship between the children and the parents in my opinion the children had the most power. One part that power is shown is when the kids begged their parents to not turn off the nursery, and the parents let them be in their for a couple of minutes. The children have the power to tell their parents what to do, well in my opinion, thats what I think.

Is having everythingyou desire a good thing?

example of desire

In my opinion, I think that having everything you desire is a bad thing. The people then change and only think about themsleves, in other words they turn selfish. Such as in the story the kids got what hey wnated adn they ended up up killing their parents. The people keep asking for more and more. As soon as they get what they want they use it and ten minutes later they don’t it want anymore. Later they ask for more and more and its not necceessary its just desiring. That’s my opinion.

Desire vs. Need

There are some differences from desire and need. Desire is wishing and yearning in having something. Need is when you it’s actually vital. When you need something it’s not because you want it its because it’s neccessary. An example of desire and need is like in the story, the veldt, the kids wanted to keep the room but they didn’t need it they were just yearning it.
